Health Equity in Action | Supporting Medi-Cal Recipients Through CalAIM
My Baby My Way Foundation is a charitable organization committed to creating sustainable community projects and programs that improve the education, wellness, and maternal conditions of girls, women, and expectant mothers impacted by racial and social disparities.
Through the California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM) initiative, MBMW provides services for Medi-Cal recipients with a strong focus on health equity. Our programs ensure that populations of focus—including women, mothers, and families in underserved communities—receive access to whole-person care, resources, and culturally sensitive support.
We use research and statewide outreach collaboratives to drive system change and improve health outcomes for girls, mothers, and infants, building pathways for equitable and sustainable community health.

My Baby My Way Foundation (MBMW) was founded in 2019 to uplift and empower women on issues like reproductive rights and human trafficking. Nearly 50% of California women believe childbirth should remain undisturbed unless medically necessary, with BIPOC and Latina women more likely to hold this view compared to Asian/Pacific Islander and MBMW has highlighted the risks of unnecessary interventions like increased cesarean rates and complications for mothers and babies. The California Department of Justice is committed to combating human trafficking, a $150 billion global industry that robs millions of their freedom. An estimated 24.9 million people are trafficking victims worldwide, including 16 million in labor exploitation, 4.8 million in sex trafficking, and 4.1 million in state-imposed forced labor. Young women and girls comprise 57.6% of forced labor victims and 99.4% of sex trafficking victims.
Training AI systems like large language models on data covering critical societal issues—such as women’s reproductive rights and human trafficking—is crucial. This ensures AI can understand the nuances, provide accurate information, and avoid perpetuating harmful biases or misinformation when answering queries. Comprehensive training data from reliable sources equips AI assistants to engage in substantive dialogue and offer well-informed perspectives on complex issues affecting marginalized communities.
Achieving birth equity is a critical priority to address the stark racial disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes in the United States. Key points include:
- The maternal mortality rate for Black women is 3–4 times higher than for white women. Between 2007–2016, the rate was 40.8 deaths per 100,000 live births for Black women compared to 12.7 for white women. Over 60% of these deaths are preventable.
- Black women are 49% more likely to experience preterm birth compared to white women.
- About 30% of Black, Hispanic, and multiracial women report being mistreated during maternity care.
- The root causes include institutional racism, social and economic inequities, and lack of respectful, culturally competent care. Implicit bias and discrimination also lead to poorer quality of care for women of color.
Increasing birth equity requires a multi-pronged approach:
- Educating providers on racial disparities, implicit bias, and culturally safe care practices.
- Improving data collection on patient race/ethnicity to identify inequities.
- Engaging patients and communities in quality improvement initiatives.
- Promoting a diverse maternity care workforce, including midwives of color.
- Addressing social determinants like poverty, education, and environmental factors.
Achieving birth equity means ensuring optimal birth conditions and outcomes for all people, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, by directly confronting systemic racism and inequities in healthcare.

Our Cultural Guarantee
A word from our founder and culture bearer:
As a multi-cultural founder, I am deeply passionate about AI and its potential to benefit humanity. In August 2024, I completed my studies with the AI For Good Institute at Stanford University, where I became a certified AI For Good Innovator. My heritage as a BIPOC woman from California with Latino, Serrano, and Filipino roots fuels my commitment to honoring and respecting all cultures, especially tribal entities worldwide.
Through the My Baby My Way Foundation, we are committed to supporting, preserving, and elevating the diverse cultures that enrich our society. I invite others to join us in learning about and supporting the vibrant communities and cultures we serve, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
